Mark Zuckerberg Takes Inspiration from Iron Man with Plans for 'Jarvis' Home AI
Each year Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg likes to set himself a personal challenge. In the past these challenges have included learning Mandarin or reading 2 books a month. This time, he seems to be getting more ambitious. Fancying himself something of a Tony Stark, Zuckerberg has announced plans to make his own version of Jarvis, Iron Man's iconic AI butler from the MCU film series.
Zuckerberg's version is unlikely to come housed in a state of the art flight suit, but successfully creating a system such as Jarvis would be a massive achievement in itself. The sophistication of the learning algorithms, language centers and logical processors required to make such a system work is on a level not yet seen even with our modern technological capabilities.

Zuckerberg announced his plans in a recent Facebook post:
"Every year, I take on a personal challenge to learn
new things and grow outside my work at Facebook. My challenges in recent years
have been to read two books every month, learn Mandarin and meet a new person
every day. My personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple AI to run my
home and help me with my work. You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron
Man."
It says a lot about Zuckerberg's own intelligence and confidence, or possibly his naivety, that he can describe this Jarvis system as a "simple AI". Zuckerberg further detailed his plans to have the AI system learn faces so it can answer the door, check on his Daughter when he cannot be there and control everything from his lights to his music to his heating.
It all sounds pretty ambitious, but if anyone has the resources to pull it off it's going to be Zuckerberg, let's face it. I would still urge him to pay a little more attention to the warnings from various tech geniuses concerning creating sophisticated AI without a proper understanding of consciousness, but at least for now this seems more like a universal remote than Skynet.
