Penguin Bloom - The Magpie Instagram Star Gets a Book Deal
Penguin was rescued by the Bloom family as a chick. Without her mother, her chances of survival in the wild were nil, so the Blooms took her in. At the same time, Sam Bloom, the mother of the family, was recovering from a fall that almost claimed her life, and had left her stricken with paralysis. In looking after Penguin, the Blooms were able to counteract the overwhelming tragedy and depression surrounding Sam's condition.
As Penguin grew up, Sam's husband Cameron began to document her development photographically, and then posted the results on Instagram. Now, Penguin has over 100,000 followers. There are a few reasons why Penguin has become such a sensation, aside from her actual backstory. The examplary quality of Cameron's photographs have a lot to do with it, but beyond that, magpies are members of the corvid family, and are thus astoundingly intelligent, making a lot of her behaviour fascinating to observe. In one image, one of the Bloom kids is lifting a barbell, and Penguin is lying on her back mimicking the position with a stick.
Now a book is being published about the heartwarming tale, entitled Penguin Bloom - The Odd Little Bird Who Saved a Family. It will also feature Cameron's pictures, and has been written by best selling Australian author and leading wildlife expert Bradly Trevor Grieve. It will be released on April 1st.
