Hillary Clinton's Plan to "Correct" Social Media Attackers
CorrectRecord.org |
Correct the Record, a PAC that separated from super PAC American Bridge 21st Century in May, has received a fair amount of funding towards their "Barrier Breakers" project. Aiming to address those who barrage Hillary supporters, misrepresent her political stance, or otherwise speak ill of the candidate on social media, Barrier Breakers will correct where necessary.
With $5 million to play with, Correct the Record has dedicated one million towards the online battle, according to the Daily Beast. Much of the verbal wordplay and banter will be conducted across the usual suspects: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. The PAC wasted no time in taking action, having "addressed more than 5,000 people that have personally attacked Hillary Clinton on Twitter" as of Thursday. Ripples of the impact are already being seen across the net.

Generally, PACs are barred from directly coordinating with campaigns, but as the internet is technically a free source, not independently owned in other words, Correct the Record has found a FEC loophole to work through. The PAC is not putting any money into ads, rather it plans to simply correct misconceptions online, allowing it to work closely with the Clinton campaign. Correct the Record spokesperson Adrienne Watson further clarifies their position, "This exception has been relied upon countless times by organizations raising non-federal money. The only thing unique about Correct the Record is that it is making its contributors and expenditures public."

As stated on the official PAC site, "Lessons learned from online engagement with 'Bernie Bros' during the Democratic Primary will be applied to the rest of the primary season and general election - responding quickly and forcefully to negative attacks and false narratives." A summary of Barrier Breakers' directive is available to review.
Heading up the project is super PAC founder David Brock. In addition to creating the PAC, Brock maintains the liberal website Media Matters for America which is a self-proclaimed "progressive research and information centre dedicating to comprehensively monitoring, analysing, and correcting conservative misleading information in the U.S. media."
Priorities USA Action, a pro-Clinton super PAC, will combine efforts with Correct the Record in July to create a fundraising committee dubbed American Priorities '16 according to the New York Times.
