"The Most Famous Artist" Sells Cash Bundles as Art

The art world is an ever-evolving beast of colours, mediums and even items that become something entirely different despite their paltry beginnings. Take for example Matty Mo, an L.A artist better known by his internet moniker "The Most Famous Artist", who has found a very peculiar means of expression.

By assembling a stack of cash into a rectangular bundle held together by rubber bands, Mo has created a unique form of art. A total of ten pieces were made, each priced at $5,000 and containing 1,000 bills per piece. All were sold within minutes of being put up for sale, leaving Mo with the hefty sum of $50,000. Immediately, the question that comes to mind is, just how much money is in each piece?

In an interview with Digital Trends, Mo says, " Let's not focus on the value of the money. That is like analysing how much material cost went into a painting and scrutinizing the margin the artist is making once the painting sells." He isn't wrong. The cost of painting or sculpting supplies at Hobbycraft is negligible, especially when paying into a personal pastime. The transformation from material to art is intangible, and oftentimes, not universally recognized. As is the case with Mo, his pieces are called into question.

If any among us had realized that amassing a stack of petty cash and binding it together would essentially work as a trade off for a greater sum of money, we would all have taken advantage of the art-starved public to capitalize. Mo, however, claims to have more interest in what his project says about humanity. The pieces have invoked an analysis of their meaning and people's reactions, inviting a discussion documented on social media. The immediate sellout of his pieces is the most ponderous question.

With the assurance of a body guard and camera crew, Mo will personally deliver each piece with a signed certificate of authenticity, including the serial numbers of each bill within the stack. Let's hope the camera captures the mile-long certificate. Imagine, with all those serial numbers! The majority will be delivered to New York and Los Angeles (no surprise, some of the wealthiest places in America) with a lone purchaser in Illinois.

This calls to mind a previous article dealing with a new brand of artists, those of the digital age who thrive online and explore fresh mediums.
