Lady Gaga's Half-Time Show Takes Social Media by Storm - Super Bowl 2017
The Superbowl, the only football event where the half-time show is guaranteed to overshadow the sport. 2017 brought the turn of pop-legend Lady Gaga, proving to be the 'greatest in history' if social media stats are anything to go by.
Gaga performed nine of her chart-topping classics, from her debut favourites 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' to the recent release 'A Million Reasons' from new album 'Joanne'. The performance was an explosive display of lights, dancing, fireworks and even flying, which caused social media to blow up.
There were 41,000 tweets containing the word 'Gaga' per minute over on Twitter, with a total of 5.1 million tweets according to Forbes. While Facebook saw 396,000 people talking about the performance per minute. It's safe to say Gaga's performance was significantly more popular than last years Half-time show on social media, with the Beyoncé, Coldplay and Bruno Mars spectacle being tweeted about 3.9 million times.
With the huge popularity of the performance came the comeback of her well-loved songs back into the charts, with many of her releases from 2008 onward making their way back into the iTunes Top 20 during the show.
It was also recognised that Vice President Mike Pence was present at the event, with many on social media speculated about how Pence, who has openly expressed some controversial feelings on sexuality, would react to Lady Gaga's loud and proud messages of equality during 2011 song 'Born This Way'.#MillionReasons just made a MASSIVE jump on iTunes, and now has a 33% lead over the #2 song already. pic.twitter.com/0obReVaq6F

Promoting equality in race and the LGBT+ community, lyrics read 'No matter black, white or beige, chola or orient made.', 'No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, trans-gendered life, I'm on the right track baby, I was born to survive.'
Here's a few reactions of those who acknowledged the clash of Gaga 's message and Pence's views:

It makes me happy that Mike Pence was in the room while @ladygaga performed an anthem that celebrates LGBTQ people 👍— Sarah Kate Ellis (@sarahkateellis) 6 February 2017
With Politics aside, Lady Gaga's half-time performance was widely loved by adoring fans, the show resulting in being an absolute spectacle of talent and energy. Plus with a huge amount of advertisers including Pepsi, Budweiser and Mcdonalds and the show reaching over 100 million people, Gaga took the perfect opportunity to announce her 'Joanne' world tour, kicking off in summer this year.
And of course, twitter took to creating some brilliant memes of Gaga's flying stunt, so until next year's Superbowl, I'll leave you with this pure brilliance:
