The Power of Platforms and Social Media’s Role in the Afghanistan

Social media can be a daunting place at times. Over the last few years, the pandemic, political division, and climate change has dominated our feeds. It can be difficult to access or even imagine the positives that are often lost in the background. Fortunately, there has been a change over the last couple of months, with news of fundraisers reaching donations in the millions for struggling Afghan refugees seeking solace overseas and in neighbouring countries. When we are beginning to lose faith in the purpose of social media’s overwhelming presence in our everyday lives, we have to wonder, would this have ever been possible without these platforms?

Many activists shared their fundraiser links over platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook

Some campaigns have raised thousands from global donations. It is a refreshing insight the people social media can bring together.

While many groups and individuals on social media have focussed their attention on raising money. Many centres and charities on sites such as Facebook have gathered mass donations of clothes and other essentials.

Zahra Hashimee, a 22-year-old TikTok user with a large following 3.1 million, showed the world other ways in which people can come to the aid of the most affected people in the Afghanistan crisis. She shared a video with a script to help people to contact their local members of congress and push change to government bodies, while leaving the same message for Adam Smith, a Washington D.C congressman:

“The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and forceful resurgence of the Taliban is deplorable and a disgrace upon the United States. After pursuing 20 years of failed policies that have endangered a humanitarian crisis, the absolute least the U.S can do is provide refuge for those seeking it.”

The enormous amount of support that has been spreading for displaced people on social media is heart-warming, especially with more than a year of pandemic-filled dread swarming around our morning newsfeed reads, and the climate change crisis dancing around our minds before we turn in for the night. It is definitely a reminder to look for positivity and humanity on social media, and right now there are a lot of compassionate moments to reflect on
